It’s my latest project for Livecbradio.com in Lincoln Nebraska. “Live 2 Meter Radio Scanner”. Around here when the storms strike, that’s when the activity on 2 meter Ham Radio goes wild. There are tens of trained Storm Spotters that are sent out to certain areas, to report back weather conditions. It’s not uncommon to hear someone with an excited voice caught in a hail storm or even a tornado. This is your source to know what the weather is doing before the National Weather Service even knows. This is the true play by play on what’s happening around Lincoln, Nebraska.
NEW! Livecbradio.com WORLD WIDE CB RADIO NET
I am pleased to announce the Livecbradio.com Internet Cb Radio now has a Daily Net. Every day at 7:30 p.m. Central Standard Time . (01:30 UTC) Users in the livecbradio talk program and those on cb radios are welcome to “check in” to the livecbradio NET. Two days a week following the NET there will be a Swap Shop. Anyone looking for items or those that may have items for sale, will have the chance to communicate their business to all NET participants and listeners. It’s a Radio NET and EVERYONE IS WELCOME!
What is a Radio Net?For the purposes of Livecbradio.com, consider it a “Radio Roll Call’. People on the Internet Cb Radio or those on cb radios meet on the same channel at the same time every day. The “NET Controller (the person running the show) usually starts by saying something like “it’s now time for the 4 o’clock NET, anyone wishing to check in please call now”. At this time people start “checking in” with their cb handle or 11 meter Call Sign. Example: “This is the Old Tea Kettle in Saginaw Washington checking in” or something like “This is three division lima tango zero four nine Brazil calling please”. As people give their handle or call sign the NET Controller writes them all down in the “Net Log”. Usually when a NET Log gets of any substantial size it is then added to a dedicated page on the internet. When everyone has checked in to the NET, if the NET Controller has time he or she will call back everyone’s call sign or handle in a roll call fashion. When you are called, this is your chance to advise everyone of any announcements you may have. If you have nothing for the group at that particular time, a simple hello will do.
Swap Shop Radio Net?
A couple days a week the Livecbradio NET will be open to swap shop activities. After everyone has checked in the NET Controller will then call everyone back one by one. When your number, handle or call sign is called, you will then have a chance to express your need for an item or to convey you have something for sale. Example: “this is 238 and I am looking for a microphone for a Cobra Radio, email me at etc” or “This is two lima delta five niner, I have a cobra 29 cb radio for sale, works good, I want 40 dollars for it, email me at etc”. The best part of the swap shop is, the items do not have to be radio related.
Who is the NET Controller?
As the owner of Livecbradio.com I tell you, it is not I. The NET Controller is “Henry in Newfoundland Canada”. Henry has run a Radio NET for The Canadian Coast Guard. He is also experienced running radio nets on Amateur Radio (Ham Radio). He has been a top class ham operator for decades as well as a fan of all things radio. This all makes him an absolute saint for this job. The fact he is an older gentleman with no political or social agendas makes him that much better of an operator. His only plan is to play radio. We could not have asked for a better person to fill this seat.
How do I get Involved, meet new friends, make contacts, sell things and play radio?
OR: Find us on the CB Radio in Lincoln Nebraska. It should get interesting when the DX starts. We have not decided on a home channel yet. Stay Tuned to Livecbradio.com for details.
What is the cheapest computer on the internet? Those are some pretty big shoes to fill in giving that statement. The answer is common sense for the most part. Have you ever seen these people order these Computer Systems for over a thousand dollars and it looks just like any other computer? Well, it is. What I am saying here is, you can get a smoking fast computer tower for under $250. You can then get a monitor for free out of the trash or buy one from a thrift store for $10. Mouse and keyboard can be had for little or nothing. There you have it, a 4000 MHz super fast brand new computer system for under $300.
Where can I get this deal at? It’s called Buy a “Barebones Computer Tower”. A barebones computer tower is a new computer tower minus hard drive, cd drive, memory, monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers. All of those items are trivial and cheap. You likely already have most of those items laying around. If you do, you can be in to a 4 Gig+ processor fast computer tower for under $225. Where?
Factory CB Radios in Cars
Just a quick bit of cb radio automotive trivia. GM DELCO cb radios came as an option in many GM cars. Factory AM/FM/CB Radios were available in Chevy, Buick, Pontiac & Cadillac Automobile.
The Most Interesting Factory CB Radio available has to be The Chevy Corvette. That’s Right. Back in the Early 80′s the Factory CB Radio was an option in the Chevrolet Corvette. Go Figure.
Back in the 23 channel cb radio era, putting your fingers inside of a cb radio meant possible electrocution. This is still possible but the risks are greatly reduced. Have you ever heard the stories about people sticking their fingers inside “cb radio amplifiers” only to get shocked so bad they were knocked across the room. They are true. I was taught not to do this in electronics class in high school. Our teacher would hand you a small capacitor he personally charged without telling you. It was just enough to make you never want to feel that sort of thing again even though he gave us all a safe amount. A “cb amp” Point being back when most of “The Rules” were made, this sort of equipment meant many dangers to a non qualified user. For example a tube cb radio or tube “cb radio amplifier” will store energy. A great amount of energy. Before a qualified technician works on any piece of tube gear they discharge everything. Likely it’s more than a thousand volts. When the technician discharges the piece of gear, the discharge is so great it sounds like a small firecracker. Without the knowledge to discharge a piece of equipment you are truly risking your life taking the cover off something like this. The people that get zapped or killed are the one that say “I’m just going to change the tubes”. The moment they touch ANYTHING in there they get zapped. Take this advice, technician fees for working on tube gear has always been low. Or, just plain get rid of it if you don’t know the true dangers of having stuff like this around. Get a bigger Antenna
I am sorry I can not quote the source, but, I remember reading some information on the internet about people getting electrocuted while trying to put up cb antennas. Back in the 80′s, there were up to 250 people killed each year doing this. That’s right, literally hundreds of people. That I have seen, there are already two videos on you tube showing people putting up cb antennas that fall on electrical wires. This was 220 going to the house. If any of these people were to drop that antenna on a 7K electrical line, you know the ones you see on busy street and alleys, those will vaporize you. If the antenna drops on one of those you will be fried even if you are not holding it. This amount of voltage and current will arc out 10 feet or more and fry you like a piece of chicken.
Besides the usual “You need to know what you are doing” lecture, people need training to do things many may consider common sense tasks. Meaning, a rocket scientist could easily be electrocuted trying to change tubes on an hf radio amplifier. This would logically be why Ham Radio tests were many times more complicated back in earlier days. Messing around with it meant death if you did not know what you were doing. The Government obviously knew this and that is why they felt you needed extensive training. It really is a no brainer when you think about it. Statistics, how many people killed a year messing with Amateur Radio and CB Gear. It was way more common than most people realized. This is why you actually had to know how to design electrical circuits to get permissions to run one of these radios.
The whole thing is a safety plan. “The FCC” was not trying to keep the cb radio man down with all of his tube gadgets. The Government darn well knew people in record numbers were killing themselves by the hundreds every year by opening the covers on some of these things. Electricity is dangerous. You know it’s dangerous when even trained people get bit by it.
Just remember what I said, a “tube amp” will kill you. And, not all outdoor power lines are created equal. You get your antenna any where near the high voltage lines and the electricity will arc out many feet and kill you. It’s not a matter of touching them, it’s a matter of getting anywhere near them. Both are going to kill you. You will be dead before your antenna hits the wire. You are dead even if you let go of the pole. Most importantly, warn other people of the danger whenever possible. Hundreds or likely thousands of people have been killed by cb related accidents since cb radio’s conception. If you throw ham radio on top of that the numbers likely nearly double.
These are not dumb people that this happens to. Safety is lapse in all of our minds or we would never have accidents of any kind. Point being, before you mess with anything you need to think safety first. It is also worth pointing out that many electrical devices without tubes are also capable or storing enough energy to shock you.
Are you interested in placing your police scanner receiver live on the internet for others to listen to?
Another idea would be to have your own police scanner streaming on your home computer so you can listen to it on your internet capable phone, laptop or even on the computer at work. No matter where you are, you can hear your police scanner. Now that would be a handy.
It’s easy to do. the software from windows to do this is free. All you need is a cheap audio cord to plug your scanner in to your soundcard on your computer. I wrote a tutorial on this to tell you how easy it is to put your police scanner live online.
What is the cheapest ham radio in the world? We could split hairs over this, but, in this sense, we are talking about the cheapest most easily available ham radio with voice. It’s the Realistic HTX-100 Ten Meter Transceiver. You see these radios often kicking around for $25-$75 dollars on ebay. With this radio, a 5 dollar piece of coax and a couple pieces of wire, one could easilly work the globe on this radio. Especially since the “Cycle 24″ sunspot cycle is coming soon. This will allow world wide radio communications with cheap little ham radios and small antennas.
Yes, you can still get on ham radio for under $50. This radio has an impressive 25 watts. One could easily spend a few minutes to get their Ham License and be home talking on the air within the hour.

Looking for a Used HF Radio?
USED HF RADIOS
I have been in this position myself in the past. Even more specific you are looking for a Used HF Radio under five hundred dollars. Yes, it is possible to get a decent HF Ham Radio for this price. One good choice of the first place to start looking is ebay. Number two, it’s safe to say you will have better luck buying from a Ham Operator. The older the better. The way an auction is constructed, worded as well as the past reputation of the seller are things to greatly consider. Have they already sold used hf rigs that people were satisfied with?
Rather than doing all of the searching to find what hf radios are in what price range etc, I have made it easy for you. In my experience the most popular Used HF Radios under five bills are the Icom 718, Icom 735, Kenwood TS-50, Kenwood TS-440 and the very most popular Used HF Radio of all time, The Kenwood TS-430. There are other radios out there, but these are the most popular that are usually available on ebay. The Icom 718 is the most recent. The others have truly proven themselves to stand the test of time. A couple honorable mentions you might see as alternatives to the above would be, the Yaesu FT-840 and the Icom 707. Check out the link below to assist you in making your purchase. There are some used hf radios for sale there. USED HF RADIOS
